Spencer Pratt is running for LA Mayor, like, in a serious way, not as a joke. You remember Spencer, American reality TV star who made his debut as then-boyfriend of Heidi Montag on MTV’s The Hills and subsequently became nemeses to Lauren Conrad and America throughout the duration of the show. The Pratts whole thing was being annoying for attention and doing anything for fame, including fake filing for divorce in 2010 to help boost Heidi’s failing pop star career (it never took off). Last year, the Pratts house burned down in the Palisades fire and Spencer sued the city of Los Angeles and California Governor Gavin Newsom arguing that city’s poor water management led to the fires. That case is still in discovery, but Spencer has had the time to organize and launch a mayoral campaign for the city this year. It’s hard to ignore the very Trump-esque campaign he’s running - pulling on his “media entrepreneur” roots, his lack of politician experience, and “tapping into a general sense of anger that people have” about LA and the country. He’s running against current LA mayor Karen Bass, the first woman and second black person mayor of LA, ever. She assumed office in 2022 after winning a campaign largely based on tacking homelessness in LA and has since decreased street homelessness by 18% in two years by increasing stabilizing services and housing options for people. She currently leads in the polls against Pratt, but the primary race is June 2nd and Pratt’s campaign is picking up media speed. The top two candidates will advance to a run off in November after the June 2nd vote, unless one of them gets over 50% of the vote.

Drake released Iceman, his first solo album since 2023, last week followed by two additional surprise albums in his long-awaited response to the Kendrick beef. I personally won’t be listening, but all three albums were topping the charts so I’m sure there’s gotta be one of you who is still a Drake fan. Pitchfork (top music review publication) gave Iceman a 4.8/10, starting their review with the following banger of a line: “Part one of Drake’s comeback trilogy is an attempt to settle the score. He does not succeed.” Rolling Stone features an article with this hilarious headline: “He’s Upset: Here’s Everyone Drake Is Mad at on ‘Iceman’.” Safe to say, Drake isn’t beating the ‘terrible at rapping’ allegations Kendrick started in 2024 with his grammy-winning hit “Not Like Us.”

In other news, the United States is still set to host the FIFA World Cup (most prestigious global men’s soccer tournament) in partnership with Canada and Mexico, starting in June. This year, the World Cup final will feature a halftime show for the first time ever (so American honestly), with performances by Madonna, Shakira, and BTS. You may have been hearing controversy about the World Cup, largely around outrageous ticket prices (like literally >$20,000 per ticket on average on resale sites), Trumps obsession with visas and immigration regulations possibly barring players and fans from entering the US (though last week they suspended a $15k bond for players and fans of certain countries for the tournament), a delay in funding for security in host cities, and overall lack of preparedness as described in detail in the linked Politico article. I for one will be staying up to speed on all the drama (and speculating what Madonna and Shakira will perform at the final in July), but for now will leave you with this round up of Europeans thinking they can just walk to MetLife Stadium instead of paying $150 round trip on NJ Transit. I will spare you a political corner this week because this issue is already so late, but just know that Trump took 15 CEOs to a two day summit in China with China’s President Xi Jinping. No major cabinet members or politicians who jobs are to be diplomats had been reportedly in attendance, but don’t worry, Elon Musk, Tim Apple, and Donald Trump Jr. were there to help… idk broker better deals for phones and spaceships???
