Hello prettybusy friends! This is Culture Over Coffee - your quick rundown of things that happened in the ether this week while you were busy. I’m back after being away on a bachelorette party + solo beach trip the last two Sundays. I was in Mexico and had such a restorative time, that I ignored my computer in favor of taking my own advice: to become busy with rest. I’ll be writing more about that in an upcoming deep dive, because all busy women could use the reminder!

Anyway, here are the top 5 things you may have missed this week, including a short political corner because there’s so much random stuff happening there (I’ll make it fun I promise!).

you deserve a bit of whimsy before we start. this made me 😆

Top 5 Cultural Moments of the Week that you may have missed:

  1. Megan thee Stallion announced that she dumped NBA player Klay Thompson for cheating on her, in a post on her IG story on Saturday. Thompson is a 36 year old basketball player whose team, the Dallas Mavericks, missed the playoffs this year. So if you’re inspired to get in touch with your fave Etsy witch (as many Megan fans have been claiming on socials), maybe ask for something not basketball related because he won’t be stepping on a court for a while. In Megan’s post, she referenced his lack of desire for monogamy, lying, infidelity, and “HORRIBLE mood swings” as reasons she was breaking up with him.

    1. What you need to know about Megan thee Stallion: She’s 31 and she’s an independent artist who releases her music under her own label. She’s an only child who lost both her parents and several grandparents before her career took off and before she graduated college. As a result, she’s been very vocal about what family means to her and wanting a big family. She’s had a few tumultuous relationships (romantic and otherwise) with men, including being shot in the foot by Tory Lanez who was literally sentenced to jail for 10 years for shooting her! She’s HIGHLY vocal about women’s empowerment, calling her fans “Hotties” after her catch phrase “real hot girl shit” and being unapologetically herself both online and on stage. And, she’s currently on Broadway in NYC in Moulin Rouge ( Culture over Coffee readers will know ), as the first female-identifying performer in the role of Zidler. She’ll be there through May 17th (though it was reported on reddit she called out tonight, understandably so!) and I hope she lives her best NYC life these next few weeks.

Needless to say, we ride at dawn for Megan thee Stallion. I was really rooting for them because if any superstar woman is willing to post her guy on main, make Thanksgiving dinner from scratch for him and his family, AND buy a house with someone, I had to believe she found a diamond in the rough. Turns out 36 year old men everywhere are “still figuring out” their dating goals. 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

  1. Beyoncé News & Rumors: Lemonade, Beyonce’s culture-shifting 2016 album about Jay-Z cheating on her that rocketed her to a new level of superstardom turned 10 this week (I highly recommend revisiting this if you haven’t recently. It’s even more epic than I could’ve understood as a 25 year old). Then on Saturday, Beyoncé also shared that Destiny’s Child’s third album Survivor turned 25!!! Twenty-five whole years since my life was turned upside down with that iconic music video for the title track on the album. All this ahead of the upcoming Met Gala (annual Met museum costume department fundraiser), where Beyoncé will co-chair with Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Wintour. The Met Gala dress code this year is “Fashion is Art” so you know these women will turn looks. I’d be remiss to not mention the controversy around Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez: there are activist calls to boycott the Met Gala because they have given an undisclosed but highly publicized donation to the Met Gala while contributing to rampant inequality and decrease of quality of living in America, sigh.

    • The Rumors: The Beyhive (Beyoncé super-fan base) have been hard at work decoding Beyoncé’s Instagram/website/appearances to determine when Act III (her third album in her promised trilogy that started in 2022 with Renaissance). They’ve determined that they believe Beyonce will announce the Act III single(s) on the same day as the Met Gala (Monday May 4th), with the full album to follow on May 29th. There’s been a small pattern so far, act I’s Renaissance came out on July 29, 2022 and act II’s Cowboy Carter on March 29, 2024 with one single and two singles respectively, so the rumors also include a theory we’re getting three singles on May 4th. You can DM me if you want the Beyhive theory Tiktoks to dive deeper, or just tell me I was right when Act III drops on May 29th 😜.

Lemonade had a visual album as well! Someone uploaded it to Youtube.

  1. Quick Summer House update (because we’re still Team Ciara Miller in this house): This week, Bravo filmed the reunion for the season of Summer House that is currently airing and someone leaked raw audio footage which highlights Ciara (actual queen whose best friend stole her ex-boyfriend) calling Amanda Batula a “snake” after Amanda tries to play the victim to defend herself and her stupid actions of throwing away her friendship and fame for a man who looks like that. There are SO MANY racial under and overtones at play here that I’m quite frankly way too tired to explain rn, so please enjoy this black woman doing the heavy lifting of education: Chris Volcy on Tiktok

    • Also, Bravo is saying they’re investigating the leak because it betrays trust or some other BS corporate jargon, but I’m grateful to the leaker because without this interaction being exposed, I’m willing to bet with high certainty it would’ve been edited out of the final cut of the reunion.

    • Also also, Ciara Miller will be on the new season of Dancing with the Stars!!!! Vote for Ciara!!

and if you don’t watch Summer House or care about Bravo TV, when you see these people on your timelines, that’s who we’re talking about.

  1. A week ago-ish, Reese Witherspoon posted a video on her socials encouraging women to adopt AI: saying it’s time to accept AI’s inevitability and “women are using AI at a rate 25% lower than men on average. We don’t want to be left behind.” Now every day I see the best memes on my Threads feed of women enjoying a world where their “left behind by AI.” Since Reese’s video, Sandra Bullock has also spoken out about AI saying “We have to use it in a really constructive and creative way, make it our friend” at a CNBC/Warner Brothers panel. If you don’t know how I personally feel about AI, you can read my deep dive essay series here, but I have a lot of feelings about this:

    1) Reese’s video sounds like an ad, but isn’t tagged as an ad, which is illegal (the hiding it’s an ad part is illegal not the ad itself). 2) Reese has a reported net worth of ~$400M. Anyone (including your managers and company leadership who get a huge part of their annual bonus in stocks) who has a big stock portfolio is incentivized to be an advocate for AI because the stock market is being propped up by AI companies right now. 3) She has had suspicious vibes to me, ever since she got arrested for a DUI in 2013, so I don’t trust her.

  1. Political Corner (I know I’m sorry!!!):

    a. Not enough people are talking about the Lego-AI generated videos Iran is churning out every few days as propaganda against the United States. They’re speaking to the average American, in song and Lego form, to tell us what’s really been going on here within our borders and within our government (read: grifting, stealing, laundering, corruption). You know I’m not a fan of AI art but this level of cyber warfare has me fascinated.

    b. As I’m writing this, Trump was just evacuated from the White House Correspondant’s dinner for an alleged “shooter/assassination attempt” but then they resumed the dinner after Trump left. IDK but I just don’t believe anything him or his team does after they allegedly faked the last assassination attempt (remember the maxi pads on MAGA ears?) Plus, he fell asleep with his mouth all droopy ON LIVE TELEVISION this week (it’s real I promise), the Correspondant’s Dinner was way past his bedtime!

c. NY Congress woman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) was photographed yelling at tanning-bed-addict and United States Secretary of Health and Human Services RFK Jr. after a congressional hearing this week. She says she was defending the use of our tax dollars to go to actual healthcare and not the pockets of corporations like United Health Care. Given the current state of the government, it’s going to be an uphill battle to make any meaningful change in health care, but I’m glad to see someone in Congress finally sticking up for us about something, jeeze louise!

d. Last Friday, The Atlantic published a heavily sourced article about FBI Director Kash Patel’s out of control drinking problem and unexplained absenses from work. You may know Kash Patel as the politician who was randomly celebrating in the US Men’s Hockey team locker room acting like he himself won the Olympic gold in February of this year. Yep, that was this year. Patel has since filed a $250M defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic which seems insane and unlikely to make it very far based on all my political podcast commentators/journalists but I’ll keep you posted if this gets more messy than it already is.

Honorable mentions from the week:

  • Zara Larsson announced a remix album of her viral hit Midnight Sun called Girls Trip coming May 1st and she has Shakira, Tyla, Robyn, and a whole host of bad ass women artists joining her. Calling it now, if you’re not on the Zara Larsson train, now’s your time to HOP ON because she’s hitting her superstar stride with insane vocals, insane choreo, and finally a recognizable brand.

  • Coachella recap: two weekends, two STELLAR female headliners, one sad, broken male headliner and endless talk about Coachella being boring just the influencer Olympics now. Sabrina Carpenter performed with Madonna last weekend, marking 20 years after Madonna’s first Coachella performance (and in the original corset and boots too!). Karol G made history as the first Latina to headline Coachella EVER, celebrating her Colombian culture and Latina culture as a whole, bringing out Latin legends like Windel, Peso Pluma, and Becky G among others. Justin Bieber brought out his laptop to sing along with his early hits (apparently that’s the only way he can perform songs like “Baby” and “One Time” because he sold the rights to that catalogue). What I did like is weekend 2 he brought notable Belieber Billie Eilish for “One Less Lonely Girl” on stage to be serenaded and that did warm my heart. While I think Bieber’s weekend 2 performance was significantly better than weekend 1, it’s MADDENING how little men have to do vs. the incredible story-driven and costume-driven performances Sabrina and Karol G gave. Patriarchy, man.

  • And Olivia Rodrigo released her new song called ‘drop dead’ (it sounds too much like Taylor Swift for me to like it I’m sorry).

I wish for all Latinas to have this much fun at their job. Karol G doing it for all of us!

Best Tiktoks of the Week:

Astrology Updates…

  • As of Saturday the 25th, Uranus has left Taurus after 7-8 years of HELL for Taurus placements. If you were in the trenches with me (Taurus sun, moon, rising) you may not recognize 2018-2019 you when you look back at her. I know my whole life was turned upside down the last 7 years and I’m also glad I’m not alone in deeply jarring and HARD experiences over the last few years. I haven’t learned yet what Uranus in Gemini will mean for us (but probably something rocky for Gemini placements if my experience as a Taurus is any indication) but as always I encourage you to check out your fave astrologer’s page (or mine @chaninicholas) for all the real deets! Also fyi there will be a full moon on May 1st called the Flower Moon.

I could go on, but I won’t because even I get tired of the news. If you enjoyed this issue of Culture over Coffee, please share with a friend who may also be too busy to keep up with the cultural happenings but wants to know what’s going on!! I’ll keep up for her so she doesn’t have to. Til next time!
