Hello prettybusy community, welcome back to Culture over Coffee where I break down some of the niche pop culture (and other) news you may have missed. The horrors persist but so do we, let’s just get into it shall we?

thank you @justinaverysmith on threads for this astute observation

Top 5 Cultural Moments of the Week that you may have missed:

  1. The Harry Potter reboot trailer dropped this week, reopening the discourse of J.K. Rowling’s horrible-ness vs. loving the story/memory/world of Harry Potter. I loved Harry Potter. I went to all the midnight book releases from books 5-7. I saw every movie in theaters and I’ve reread the series more times than I can count and constantly strive to find a fantasy series that hits the same way (idk if it exists). And yet, I cannot, and will not, support a transphobic billionaire bigot. If you need a refresher on Rowling’s controversial past, Mashable has a comprehensive article. Allow me, instead, to share how this reboot even came to be.

    • After Rowling’s emergence as a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist - or a feminist who is against trans rights 🙄) in 2019/2020, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and many of the original cast have been outspoken against Rowling’s views (to be clear those against JKR are in support of trans people and their rights). Rowling then chose to maintain a public beef with the cast (mostly transpiring on X/Twitter, which is definitively the bad place now). It’s become clear that a few years later Rowling was in talks with HBO and Warner Brothers to reboot the series which is interesting timing in hindsight.

    • It’s my personal opinion that the series is being rebooted early (it’s only been 15 years since the end, this is way too soon) because of two key reasons: money, obviously, (let us not forget that her HP spinoff movie series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was unceremoniously cancelled mid-way through in 2022) and to distance Radcliffe, Watson, Rupert Grint and the rest of the anti-Rowling cast from the franchise (affecting their money and legacy). Here at prettybusy we’ve already established that billionaires are petty *ssholes, so it’s not a leap to categorize Rowling among them. Now let’s pretend the Mashable article and the main cast decrying Rowling’s beliefs isn’t enough to convince you, there are also huge issues with the reboot that have been revealed with the trailer: the new TV series looks like a carbon copy of the original movie series with dull colors and a lack of magical energy. Also, they cast a black actor, Paapa Essiedu, as Severus Snape and he’s already getting death threats. I’m all for race swapping (I loved when they made Hermione black in the Cursed Child stage play), but SNAPE?? Way to set up this black man for failure already.

As I said on Threads, you have until December 25th to grieve the loss of Harry Potter, because we’re not supporting this reboot. And if by then you really really really can’t resist, you better head over to r/piracy on Reddit to stream this outside of HBO Max.

  1. In other movie news, there’s going to be a live action Moana (also way too soon!!!) and for whatever reason, they decided to give The Rock the world’s most horrible wig. As if a) Disney doesn’t have money to spend on a wig and b) they have never met a black person or a drag queen. It’s 2026 it’s not hard to get the right wig, Hollywood!!! This article has a funny round up of people’s reactions online, but I’ll leave you with this one for now:

literally who thought this was a good idea / credit: disney

  1. The Chappell Roan of it all: By now you probably heard of a controversy happening with Chappell Roan in Brazil (she was there to headline their Lollapalooza festival), but if not, in short, Jude Law’s ex-wife’s husband, Brazilian/Italian soccer star Jorginho Frello, posted an accusation on his IG story that Chappell’s security guard had a “disproportionate” response to his stepdaughter walking by Chappell’s table and smiling. Jorginho was so upset he wrote this scathing line: "WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION,” and his post was shared broadly, even by the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro on X/Twitter.

    • What then happened was an insane pile on of people criticizing Chappell’s behavior, causing her to defend herself the next day on her IG Story, saying she didn’t even see a little girl and the security guard wasn’t even her security, which only fueled the backlash more. The security guard in question has since released a statement taking responsibility for the incident and saying “the accusations currently circulating are false and constitute defamation.” And as of yesterday, we’re seeing reports that 23% of the posts bashing her were from bot accounts, and this is what happens when we let X/Twitter exist.

    • In all seriousness though, I’ll admit I was quick to believe the soccer star’s claims because of the last few years of criticism Chappell has faced in response to her trying to set boundaries with the entertainment industry. Even I get caught up in the misogynistic storytelling and disproportional standards that women are held to, as much as I like to think I’ve dismantled patriarchy in my life. And then I saw someone else’s take that she’s having a very human response to being famous, and I instantly checked myself. I have a lot of empathy for Chappell and her sudden explosion of fame (and I think she’s an incredible artist - I saw her perform last year live), and while I do think there’s probably a truth to all these stories somewhere in the middle, I think we have bigger fish to fry (literally why aren’t people coming for Kanye’s antisemitism, or Shia LeBeouf’s abuse allegations, or the f*cking convict of a president with as much smoke as they are for Chappell!).

  1. Remember Benjamin McKenzie, you know, Ryan Atwood from The O.C.?? He’s goes by Ben now and he’s been investigating the fraudulent and shady nature of the crypto industry. He wrote a book about it (titled: Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud) and then directed a documentary that continues to build on his findings. He literally went through all the Epstein files to expose the pedophile’s early ties to the currency, so you know he’s serious. Titled Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, my new favorite investigative journalist’s doc releases to the public on April 17th in a limited theatre release, after originally premiering at SXSW last year. You can check out the trailer here and do a google to see if it’s airing near you soon. As someone who’s in their own rabbit hole about corruption (check out my Why AI is Bad series if you haven’t yet), I appreciate his longevity and commitment to the cause. I’ve been staunchly in the “crypto is money laundering” camp since I met “crypto bros” while digital nomading in 2021, so I’m glad a white man is shouting it from the rooftops because maybe now people will finally understand.

This quote from a bio featured on an event page for a screening of the film is incredible btw: “Ben McKenzie is the only 6 time Teen Choice Award nominee to have written a NYT bestselling book on economics”

  1. Because it feels irresponsible not to share some of the latest out of DC this week, I have to share a few things (I KNOW IM SORRY):

    • A few days ago, Melania Trump did some sort of pitch to the public with a company called Figure AI to bring humanoid robots into schools as teachers who have unlimited knowledge. You may have seen me scream about it on TikTok and IG.

    • Trump said a lot of things on camera this week, including but not limited to: regarding NATO, “Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us.” Mind you, he’s spent the last decade threatening to have the US leave NATO and now that he wants them to join his war, he’s disappointed in them. He also gave the lawyers of his future criminal trials some great ammo: "We have a thing called a war, or as they would rather say, a military operation. It's for legal reasons. Because as a military operation, I don't need any approvals. As a war you're supposed to get approval from Congress. Something like that. So I call it a military operation.” Get this man into a nursing home (or JAIL) stat.

    • TMZ put out a public call for videos of Congress heading through airports to vacations amidst the 6th week of the partial government shut down, which some political commentators have credited as being a factor that drove the Senate to pass a bill funding TSA late Thursday night, but as of yesterday morning, the House rejected that same bill, so airports will continue to be hell and TSA agents will continue to work without pay. 😑

Honorable mentions from the week:

Robyn (you know, “Dancing on my own”) released her 9th studio album after eight years away titled Sexistential and it’s pretty good (I love the lead single). Raye (you know, “Where is my husband”) released her 2nd studio album titled This Music May Contain Hope and it’s phenomenal. Not because I really like her all that much, but in important millennial news, Reese Witherspoon turned 50 this week, and because I LOVE her, Lady Gaga turned 40. To make time feel even more weird, Dua Lipa’s hit sophomore album Future Nostalgia turned 6 years old (because it came out March 2020 - we were so different back then 😭). Taylor Lautner and Taylor Lautner are expecting their first child together, Netflix is raising prices again for the 2nd time in just over a year (UGH), and the The Reunion: Laguna Beach special had a premiere event this weekend (airing for us on April 10th on the Roku Channel), featuring everyone except Lo Bosworth on the red carpet.

Best Tiktoks of the week (sorry no reels this time):

Astrology/Energy for last week…

  • Honestly I don’t even know. Vibes are…. (tries to find something positive to say as I lay curled up under blankets with the heat blasting because it’s winter again in NYC). I will refer you to my go-to astrologer @chaninicholas, who also happens to be an outspoken bad*ss woman I look up to.

What’s New on the Blog this Week:

  • The busy woman’s guide to women’s sports: Women’s pro soccer recently kicked off with record breaking crowds (literally 63,000 people tonight watched Denver play Washington). WNBA women negotiated a huge pay raise AND get to start their season on time (May 8th). Women’s pro hockey is about to close out their season and begin playoffs. Now’s the time to get up to speed on the basics about women’s sports in the US so you can pick a team and join the fun!
